Luxury living for you.

Breaday Gill and Folly Gill are our two beautiful cottages in Silpho, near Scarborough.  Lovingly converted from traditional stone farm buildings using environmentally conscious materials, they offer comfort, style and a welcome escape from the stresses of everyday life. Our goal was to revitalise these lovely buildings in a gentle and respectful way.

We live on one side of the courtyard of buildings, which dates from the 17th to 19th Century - with some 21st Century improvements! Original beams sit above polished concrete, underfloor-heated floors. The walls have been re-pointed with traditional lime mortar, which absorbs CO2 as it cures and the door and windows are now high performance timber units. Insulation includes wood fibre, hemp and sheepswool - to keep you warm (and cool) and the carbon footprint low. All of the heating and hot water is provided by our biomass district heating system which also uses zero-carbon solar thermal.

High quality modern furniture sits alongside hand-picked mid century and antique pieces and the beds are super comfy.

Lorna’s father, Patrick, still farms the surrounding land. We are transitioning to regenerative agriculture and already try to farm with and for nature. 30% of our arable land is given over to either wild bird crops or nectar rich areas for pollinators. We have worked with Scarborough Field Naturalists to erect six Swift boxes this year and hope to attract breeding pairs for next year. They will join the Swallows and House Martins which visit each year and raise their young all around the courtyard and farm buildings.

Our immediate plans include the restoration of the old dew pond to provide an additional resource for biodiversity recovery, several hundred metres of new, native hedgerows and 100 metres of dry-stone wall restoration. We are continually looking improve the farm for wildlife, biodiversity and to tread more lightly on the patch of the planet we call home.

We feel very fortunate to live here and believe Silpho offers a perfect base for exploring the beauty of the North York Moors National Park and the hidden coves and expansive beaches of the Yorkshire Coast.  We hope you come and find out for yourselves…
